Beginners Swim Program (Summer):
The small pools at Franklin and Lincoln are great for water adjustment for younger children.
During the summer session, the Beginners class is offered for preschoolers and/or children who do not know how to swim, 2x a day on weekdays at both pools. There is no fee for members to participate (your household must have a current ASPA membership). There is no need to register in advance. Participants need to just show up during the designated class time. Classes will be administered by the guards on duty that day. This is a great opportunity for your swimmer to get comfortable in the water, progress, learn how to tread water and eventually be ready for Kinderswim or the Reds, Greens and Blues swim program.
*Swim diapers required, if needed.
Reds, Greens, Blues Novice Swim Program (Spring, Summer and Fall)
This program has Spring, Summer and Fall sessions offered 5 days a week. During the Summer session this class is drop-in at both Franklin and Lincoln pools as long as the swimmer has attained a Red, Green or Blue Fish. Please bring your Fish patch to class. During the Spring and Fall sessions you need to register in Captyn to be admitted into these classes to make sure that memberships are current, the swimmer has passed the Fish test and to give the program manager email access to update important information.
Admittance into the RGB program requires passing the Water Safety Test (see test guidelines in the Member Guide). In the Summer please have your child attend the Beginners class if they do not have a Fish. Fish tests are given every Friday at 3:30pm at the end of the 3:00 Beginners class. Your child needs to attend the Brginners class that day to assess readiness for the test. Fish tests are given every Friday the entire Summer season. In the Spring and Fall test days will be listed in the Captyn Registration.
You MUST BE AN ASPA Member for RGBs. You can register for an ASPA Base Membership online here. Members, please register your child for Spring and Fall RGBs online here.
"Fish Test" qualifications for each level:
Green: 5 years old - Pass Water Safety Test
Red: 6 years old - Pass Water Safety Test
Blue: 7+ years old - Pass Water Safety Test
Advanced Swimmer Class (Summer)
This is for water-safe swimmers, generally age 10-18, who are able to swim the full length of the pool. This class focuses on strengthening the swimmer’s strokes and getting exercise.
Lincoln Pool (Monday through Friday)
Family Swim (Spring, Summer and Fall)
Guarded General Membership open swim Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30-5:30 PM mid-April through the end of October.
Keyholder Swim (Year Round)
Red Cross Certified Keyholders and their families may swim during non-scheduled times as long as there is a lifeguard on deck. Non-keyholders must be accompanied by a Red Cross Certified Keyholder during non-scheduled times.
Kinderswim Program (Spring and Fall)
The no-cost Kindergarten Swim Program, also known as "Kinderswim," is provided twice a week for approximately six weeks in the fall, from mid-September through the end of October, and for six weeks in the spring during the latter part of April and May. The purpose of this free program is to enable kindergarten-aged children who attend Kindergarten in Alameda to be water safe and initially learn how to swim. ASPA Member families can also attend this class with children who are Beginner swimmers of any age, but an adult must be in the pool with their swimmer. Students progress from the small pool to the big pool as skills improve.
A parent or caregiver is expected to bring the child and enter the pool to assist during the lesson. Essentially, parents are taught how to instruct the child, and the program is offered on a first come, first-served basis.
Senior Swim
Senior Swim is a guarded "free of charge" program provided Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Franklin Pool. It is open to all non-member senior (50+) residents of Alameda for lap swimming. Members are encouraged to swim at different times to avoid overcrowding.
AlamedaGators Swim Team
For children ages 5 to 18 interested in competitive swimming, the ASPA provides use of its pools for the year-round USA Swimming sanctioned Alameda Gators Swim Team. This organization has a separate board of directors from the ASPA board. Evaluation information can be found here.
Community & Social Use
Pool use time is provided to the Alameda Fire Department for water safety training for its employees, as well as Franklin Pool being home to Alameda Emergency Radio.
The ASPA offers social activities, BBQs and gatherings throughout the summer to its members.
Members can reserve the pool for private use so long as the event meets certain requirements.
ASPA is proud to offer 100 vouchers to Alameda residents which provide them a single swim day during family swim. These vouchers are managed by the City of Alameda.
